Power Hour

Finally, something that motivates me to click "new post." I hope I can convince Kevin to go for this.

Things have started to heat up where the climate crisis is concerned. And just in the nick of time, too, because the scientific community is growing more concerned about global warming. So get ready to spend some time in the dark as you participate in the largest climate movement in history.

Earth Hour takes place on Saturday, March 28th at 8:30 pm local time. At that moment, millions of people around the world and some 540 city governments across the globe will turn off their lights for sixty minutes in an international call to stop global warming.

Participation is easy, and we're urging all our friends to join us. All we need to do is turn out our lights for a single hour. The blackness that follows will send a message to Washington and other capitals that it's time to take strong action and make sure that the Earth remains habitable. But we all need to participate for that message to be heard. So gather your loved ones and light some candles, then tell stories, sing songs, and dream of a sustainable world. We can build it if we try.

Talk to your friends and neighbors and urge them to shut off their lights, too. Let's join people from New York City to Shanghai to spark this movement to save the environment. Because this is the hour when we can all make a difference by coming together in a single, simple act. This is the hour when we dissolve all borders to bring lasting change to the world. Let's hit the switch and get that party started.

Coupon Crazy!

So I have just discovered the coupon world. I'm not sure what I think of it. One one hand, I find it thrilling to be able to bring a little piece of paper that I have carefully cut out to a store and be one of the few that is able to cleverly combine a coupon with a great sale to get an item for next to nothing. However, I have no ability to filter which "great deals" that I take advantage of. It would be one thing if I used even half of the products that offer coupons, but I don't. I would say that 95% of all coupons are for things that I would rather not use. I have coupons coming out of my ears for cleaning products, medicine, and beauty products. I use vinegar and baking soda to clean almost everything. I rarely, if ever, use actual medicine. I do not use beauty products and make up with crappy chemicals. But all of these deals are so tempting! I broke down and got some Revlon lip gloss. I hate it. I feel like I have melted tires on my lips. I am going to return them. I got Kevin some Irish Spring soap (for free.) The bottle has advertises an "8 hour fragrance system." How does that work, a fragrance system? It is so tempting to "stockpile" Colgate, Cheerios, Cover Girl, Claritin... but even though it is a ridiculously good deal, I know that I will not use those products. Is is worth it to stock up and have a garage sale?

I think maybe I should put more effort into shopping smart for the things that I do buy. It is just a little more difficult.

Carrot, Egg, or Coffee?

I wish I knew who to give credit to for this, it was posted on a bulletin board of a group that I am a member of with no author. I thought this was very clever!

A carrot, an egg, and a cup of coffee...You will never look at a cup of coffee the same way again.

A young woman went to her mother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up, She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved, a new one arose.

Her mother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire. Soon the pots came to boil. In the first she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs, and in the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil; without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her daughter, she asked, ' Tell me what you see.'

'Carrots, eggs, and coffee,' she replied.

Her mother brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they were soft. The mother then asked the daughter to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard boiled egg.

Finally, the mother asked the daughter to sip the coffee. The daughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The daughter then asked,
'What does it mean, mother?'

Her mother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity: boiling water. Each reacted differently. The carrot went in strong, hard, and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior, but after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened. The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

'Which are you?' she asked her daughter. 'When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

Think of this: Which am I? Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff? Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you. When the hour is the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate yourself to another level? How do you handle adversity? Are you a carrot, an egg or a coffee bean?

May you have enough happiness to make you sweet, enough trials to make you strong, enough sorrow to keep you human and enough hope to make you happy.

The happiest of people don't necessarily have the best of everything; they just make the most of everything that comes along their way. The brightest future will always be based on a forgotten past; you can't go forward in life until you let go of your past failures and heartaches.

When you were born, you were crying and everyone around you was smiling.

Live your life so at the end, you're the one who is smiling and everyone around you is crying.

Part 2- Newport Beach!

After a few days in San Diego, Lisa rented a car and we drove to Newport Beach. Renting the car was quite an ordeal, Lisa didn't have driver's license and neither of us had a credit card, only debit. To make a long story short, the third time was a charm.

Travel tip- if you are planning on renting a car, make sure you have a valid driver license, a credit card in your name!

Forget Six Flags, surf lessons and Knotts Berry Farm! Finley is a natural born golfer! How could he not be, being half Scottish!

Here he is crawling around Enterprise. He was freaking out to get out of my arms. We were there long enough that I had to let him go. He enjoyed himself!

This was on a truck at the beach. Not sure if this is a joke or not.

Eating at Cocos! My grandparents used to take me to Cocos every Saturday for bacon and eggs! They're not in Dallas anymore so I was excited to eat here!

My awesome son already has a street named after him!!!

Playing on the beach was so fun! Finley loved the sand!

Looking at the birds!

The boys loved swinging on the beach!

Lisa and Trevor!

After a long day Finley needed a snack and a nap!

Bath time for Trevor and Finley! We improvised with the bath toys- bottle lids, a water bottle, and an apple!

They're so good at sharing!

Finley helping me pack, reminding me to take my vitamins.

The airplane ride home!

He's so nosy!

Looking out the window. He liked the airplane! Both boys were very well behaved on both plane trips. We got lots of compliments! I think it was the boobs that helped keep them happy!

A taste of San Diego

Oh my gosh I never thought I'd be so happy to be home! Yes, happy to be back to lame Dallas. Dallas may not have sandy beaches, palm trees, beautiful hills, or pedestrian friendly streets, but is is what I call home. It is great to be back in a familiar, cozy environment, and best of all, to be home with Kevin. I think Finley really started to miss home and daddy. He became abnormally clingy with me, not letting me even put him down! Changing Trevor's diapers became a real task with Finley screaming and trying to climb my leg. He had fun with Trevor at first but soon became aware that he was taking my attention away from him. I think the first offense was trying to have Trevor in our bed for nap time. That was unacceptable and caused a serious upset of screaming and crying, which caused sweet Trevor to be upset. I had to call in Lisa for that one. But for the most part, taking care of the boys was pretty easy. I walked around the Gaslamp all day long. I was afraid to venture too far because I didn't want to be stuck far away in the middle of an unhappy baby situation. Luckily there weren't any scenes caused because I kept each outing to a maximum of 2 hours. I wanted to come back to the hotel to eat, change diapers, and give them some exercise- playing on the floor.

Here we are out and about!

Playing together!

This is Finley when he isn't fed fast enough! Trevor is like, "Dude, chill out!"

Feeding two babies can be a bit messy!

So what is the key to staying sane while caring for two little ones in a strange place? Treats! Treats for me that is. Even though I was on the cheap, it was totally necessary for a daily extravagance. That's the fun of vacation right?

A mocha latte!
Room service was totally necessary one night. This organic salad was worth every penny! The tomatoes were the best I have ever had! Seriously the yummiest salad ever!

The pizza wasn't so fabulous, but that was probably my fault. I asked for chicken instead of the shrimp that it was supposed to have.

The boys fell asleep in the stroller and I couldn't resist a happy hour Newcastle. I rationalized it with the theory that dark beer helps milk production.

Finley woke up during my moment of relaxation, so while Trevor slept...
(Trevor's bib is sideways because Finley is a pacifier thief! Ripped it right off when I wasn't looking)

...we had a bit of silly play time!

Part 2, our adventures in Newport Beach, coming soon!

San Diego!

Greetings from Sunny San Diego! I am here with my friend Lisa to babysit her son Trevor while she is at a conference for her work. Trevor is 3 months younger than Finley and has not yet figured out how to crawl so I don't have 2 little worms on the loose, only one. Trevor is actually the easiest baby in the world to care for. He is so sweet, very chill.

Other than me only getting 1 and a half hour of sleep the night before we left, our travel day went swimmingly. Finley had a meltdown from the airport to the hotel, and that continued in the lobby of the hotel, but he has been fine since. He was just over tired from our crazy morning of travel. Both babies were very sweet and quiet on the plane rides here. We flew to LA first, then took a 20 minute flight here. Finley actually wanted to play most of the way from DFW to LAX, which was fine with me, as long as he was happy and not causing a scene! I can't sleep on planes unless I am working. Weird, I know. But I couldn't sleep even when he was sleeping. I heard every little peep, every rustle of paper. Anyways, I was very worried about having a bad flight but it was all good!

We are staying at the Hard Rock Hotel, and yes, you should be very jealous. When I get off the elevaor on our floor, I am greeted by a giant picture of Green Day!!! There are pictures of rock stars all over the hotel. It is a really fun atmosphere. I always thought the Hard Rock Cafe was a bit cheezy, even though I was really sad and disappointed when y closed and tore down the one in Dallas. There really isn't anything cheezy about this place. It's more like me and Lisa are Wayne and Garth- "We're not worthy, we're not worthy!" Everything is cool! The freaking spare toilet paper roll has a special bag with a cool design on it. The iron is sleek and black with a red light decorating the bottom. No detail has been overlooked! The people that work here had to have passed a coolness test! They all just look "cool" with great hair and great tattoos. They have little guitar pic name tags with their favorite band under their name, like California Pizza Kitchen does with your hometown. If I worked here I think under my name would be either Widespread Panic or Pearl Jam. So far I've seen Guns N Roses, Sublime, and The Roots.

Being here in SD makes me remember how much I want to leave Dallas. Dallas is lame!

I'll post pics of out adventues when I get home, Saturday night.
